Here's where to get a flu shot in Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties in Maryland

With flu season right around the corner, it's time to schedule your annual flu shot. Whether you find yourself in Worcester, Wicomico or Somerset counties, free flu clinics will be available to the public beginning in late September.

Here's a roundup of this year's flu clinics around the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and more to know about the disease and how to avoid it.

HEALTH: First West Nile virus case in Maryland is on Eastern Shore. How to avoid getting sick.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can cause mild to severe illness in individuals of all ages and can also, at times, be fatal.

Most symptoms emerge within 24 to 48 hours and are characterized by fever, chills, sore throat, cough and headache. Just one infected person can unknowingly pass on the flu to family members and loved ones, as the virus can be transmitted 24 hours before symptoms appear, said the Atlantic General Hospital in a news release.

Flu viruses spread through tiny droplets made when an individual coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of those nearby. Less often, a person may get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it, and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes, reported the CDC.

How do I avoid getting sick?

Marylanders can reduce their risk of infection with flu by taking the following steps to protect themselves and others:

  1. Avoid close contact.

  2. Stay home when you are sick.

  3. Cover your mouth and nose.

  4. Clean your hands.

  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

  6. Practice other good health habits.
