Here's what's new at the Selena mirador in downtown Corpus Christi.

The Selena statue and mirador in downtown Corpus Christi has a new look, new lighting and a new sound system.

Described as one of eight “Mediterranean, Moroccan-inspired gazebo outlooks” along the downtown seawall, each was revamped with new lighting as part of a $400,000 project, said City Manager Peter Zanoni in a recent news conference.

As part of the project, the existing incandescent lighting was replaced with color-changing LED lighting, city officials said – in photos, showing as a range of a peach, purple, green and blue tones.

In addition to the new lighting, the Selena statue has a fresh coat of paint and a restored sound system that plays music and also narrates a short overview of the Tejano singer’s life, Zanoni said.

Construction of the structures was the work of the late philanthropist Dusty Durrill through the Devary Durrill Foundation.

The project is among a slew currently in the works or planned that are intended to improve the seawall and marina areas that draw high traffic from visitors and residents.

The upgrades to the miradors “bring a modern and very elegant touch to the area for an improved experience overall,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo in the news conference last week.

“In the heart of our downtown, the miradors stand as a very popular landmark that capture the essence of our city’s charms,” she said.
