Henderson’s route to recovery after tornado

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) – The National Weather Service confirmed an EF2 tornado struck down in Henderson and parts of Cecilia causing catastrophic damage.

Doug Cramer with the National Weather Service says there were “maximum sustained winds of about 120 miles per hour with this tornado. The max width is going to be about 400 yards.”

The tornado is estimated to have traveled about 5 miles and died out in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Residents in the area say they have been without power since Monday night when what some described to me as a nightmare to have experienced. “This was my first tornado ever and it was the most intense experience I’ve ever had,” said one resident

Anna Schoenfelder is another resident who said, “This was worse than a hurricane.”

“I felt like a Lego being picked up by a little kid. Like it was going to, you know, the house shook in a way that I’ve never even felt,” said Franchesca Gilbert.

The well-known Pats Fisherman’s Wharf and Restaurant absorbed catastrophic damage to the entire property. A Teurlings High School graduation party was set up to take place in the dance club just hours after the storm hit. Part owner of Pat’s, Harvey Huval, says pats will bounce back.

“We tough man. We are some tough Cajuns we will come back strong, better than ever.”
