LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The City of Henderson Animal Care and Control will resume normal operations starting Tuesday after enforcing a temporary halt on accepting animals and adoptions due to a confirmed case of canine influenza.

The city said that included in the dogs that are currently at the shelter, about 25% of the dogs that were quarantined will be available for adoption.

The shelter still has around 60 dogs who are under quarantine for both exposure and positive tests. Testing for canine influenza is being completed weekly, the city said.

The virus did not originate within the shelter but instead is believed to have been brought in by a previously infected surrendered dog, according to Henderson Animal Shelter’s Administrator Danielle Harney.

The canine influenza virus has symptoms similar to “kennel cough,” including sneezing, nasal discharge, and persistent coughing. These symptoms are often accompanied by fever and lethargy.
