Tax season is finally upon us. If you are unsure how to go about filing your taxes, don't sweat it. You could qualify for free or assisted filing before the April 15 deadline.

Do I qualify for free online tax filing programs?

There are multiple ways to file taxes. Depending on your income, it could come at no costs.

United Way offers a free tax filing website in English or Spanish. People with an income under $79,000 can file their own taxes at myfreetaxes.com. It takes an hour or less, and is the most popular way, according to United Way.

Anyone who makes under $60,000 can have their taxes prepared for them via a virtual appointment. It will take two to three weeks to complete

Iowa also offers options for free e-filing for those who make $79,000 a year, according to the Iowa Department of Revenue's website. Those who make more than the income limit will pay a fee for e-filing.

Can I get an in-person appointment for tax help? What if I have limited English, a disability or low income?

People with disabilities, who speak limited English or who make less than $64,000 can access the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This is a trusted, 50-year-old program that offers in-person help for preparing tax returns, according to the IRS.

What to bring to a tax filing appointment?

You will need proof of identification. This can be a driver's license, state photo ID or other government-issued identification that includes a photo. Don't forget your Social Security card or your wage and earning statement from your employer, also known as a W-2.

If you don't have a Social Security card, bring the individual taxpayer identification number for you, your spouse and any of your dependents.

Depending on your filing, you will also need to bring:

  • Birth dates for you, a spouse and dependents on the tax return

  • Proof of bank account routing and account number for direct deposits, such as a blank check

  • Interest and dividend statements from a bank

  • Health insurance exemption certificates, if received

  • A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available

What tax assistance is there for the elderly?

Anyone who is 60 years or older and in need of help filing can use Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program.

How much does assisted tax filing cost?

It is completely free. VITA/TCE are run by volunteers who must complete a tax law training that meets or exceeds the IRS standards, according to the IRS.

Those looking to access VITA or TCE services in person can find the seven nearest locations around the Des Moines area on the IRS' website.

  • Lutheran Services in Iowa: 3200 University Ave., Des Moines

  • Iowa Center for Economic Success: 2210 Grand Ave., Des Moines

  • United Way of Central Iowa: 1111 Ninth St., Des Moines

  • Polk County River Place: 2309 Euclid Ave., Des Moines

  • Evelyn K. Davis Center: 1171 Seventh St., Des Moines

  • Valley Community Center: 4444 Fuller Road, West Des Moines
