HECO: 13.9 percent energy from renewables in 2012
Hawaiian Electric: Record 13.9 percent of energy from renewables as solar, wind power grows
HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaii's largest electric utility says a record high 13.9 percent of its energy came from renewable sources last year.
Hawaiian Electric Co. said in a statement Monday it obtained 12 percent of its energy from renewables in 2011. The utility says it's on the way to surpassing its goal of using clean energy for 15 percent of its energy needs by 2015.
The company says more solar panels boosted renewable energy output on all islands. The company also benefited from more wind energy generated on Oahu and Maui and increased geothermal production on the Big Island.
Hawaiian Electric is the parent company of Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light companies. The companies serve customers on Oahu, in Maui County and on the Big Island.
