Update: Sheriff's office confirms one shot inside Dillard's at Augusta Mall

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has confirmed one person was shot Sunday afternoon at Dillard's in the Augusta Mall.

Just after 1:40 p.m., Richmond County deputies responded to Dillard's for shots fired, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

When deputies arrived, they were told the suspect fled the scene and the victim left before they arrived, according to the release. Deputies later learned the victim drove themselves to a local hospital for treatment.

The Augusta Mall remain closed on Sunday, but was expected to resume normal business hours on Monday, according to the release.

What we know about the Augusta Mall shooting

An Augusta Chronicle reporter on scene witnessed people running out of the mall at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Minutes later, nearly a dozen patrol cars, two ambulances and three Central EMS SUVs responded to the scene, according to the reporter.

A few hours later, only a handful of sheriff's office patrol cars, one Central EMS ambulance and one Central EMS SUV were still on scene.

A Dillard's employee said she started hiding behind the counter when she heard there was a shooting inside the store. Multiple employees said they hid inside a bathroom.

Dillard's media relations team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
