Heating up: KHS seeks playoff spots

Apr. 7—We're post-Easter now, and it's time to take care of business in baseball and softball in District 16-4A: let's separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Here's the bottom line: the Kilgore High School baseball team is 13-5 overall, 4-2 in 16-4A play and has been off a week — the Bulldogs had a bye over the weekend, and haven't played since early last week, a 12-0 dusting of Chapel Hill, on the road, as was chronicled in Saturday's News Herald sports section.

Coach Eugene Lafitte's Diamond 'Dogs were to play at Cumberland Academy in Tyler on Tuesday night, a few hours after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald. See an update on that game now on kilgorenewsherald.com.

Kilgore will host Bullard in a huge game this Friday night, a 7 p.m. varsity start (junior varsity has a game before that, at 4:30). The game at Cumberland Academy scheduled for last night was the beginning of the second round of district play for KHS.

As for Kilgore High School softball, it's simple: they've got to win. Kilgore has played five 16-4A games. They've won one, the one played last Friday, a 12-11 win over Chapel Hill.

To get into the UIL Class 4A playoffs, the Lady Bulldogs have to be at least in the top four in 16-4A. There are only six teams in the district. Kilgore has got to overcome the errors and get some wins to extend its season.

The Lady Bulldogs were to host Spring Hill last night, and that marks the start of the second round of district play for them — see how they fared now on kilgorenewsherald.com.

They'll be on the road Friday at Lindale, starting with a JV game at 4:30, varsity to follow.
