Heat’s Haywood Highsmith uninjured in car accident that critically injured another man

Heat forward Haywood Highsmith emerged uninjured from a car accident on Tuesday night that left at least one person with a significant injury.

Nobody died in the incident, according to two sources briefed on the matter.

Highsmith was not injured and was not arrested in the incident, which happened on his drive home from Tuesday’s game against Orlando at Kaseya Center.

According to local radio reporter Andy Slater, Highsmith hit a person who was helping another driver stuck in the middle of the road. The 21-year-old man who was hit is in critical condition and underwent a partial amputation of his right leg. He also had a broken left leg and left arm, per Slater’s report.

“We have been made aware that Highsmith was involved in a car accident heading home from last night’s game,” the Heat said in a statement. “Highsmith is listed as out for [Wednesday’s] contest against the San Antonio Spurs due to Personal Reasons.

“Our hearts go out to those who were injured. We will have no further comment at this time.”

The expectation is that Highsmith will return to the team in the coming days.

He had started seven consecutive games before Erik Spoelstra replaced him with Caleb Martin in the opening lineup for Tuesday’s game against Orlando.

Highsmith played three minutes late in the game, when the outcome was resolved.
