Heat advisory extended to Friday evening for North Jersey, wet weekend ahead

The heat isn’t going away quite yet. The National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory for the North Jersey area until 6 p.m. on Friday.

A heat advisory means that the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for at least two days in a row.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk of illness.

Record high hit

New Jersey already saw record setting heat on Thursday. Bergenfield had highs reaching 97, according to Bob Ziff at the North Jersey Weather Observers, breaking the old record of 95 set in 2018.

Ziff said it was also the highest temperature seen there this year and that Bergenfield now has 22 days over 90 for the period April to October.

Other highs today include 92 in Ramsey and Paterson, 93 in Sussex and a hot spot of 100 at Fort Dix.

Severe storm watch

There is also a severe thunderstorm watch for the region until 9 p.m. Thursday as well as an air quality alert until 11 p.m.

Weekend forecast

It's looking like a wet weekend, according to the NWS, forcing some event organizers to reschedule.

Friday: There is a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and into the evening with a high of 89 degrees and a low of 72.

Saturday: During the day there is a 50% chance of rain or thunderstorms with a high of 85 degrees. At night, the chance of storms increases to 60% with a low of about 70.

Sunday: Rain is 80% after noon with a high of 81 degrees with a 70% chance or rain in the evening (low of 69 degrees).
