Hearthstone Patch 8.0 adds new Rogue hero, prepares for 'Journey to Un'Goro'

Hearthstone has made the jump to Patch 8.0, which prepares the game for Thursday’s Journey to Un’Goro expansion.

The newest Hearthstone expansion will introduce 135 new cards to Blizzard’s collectible card game. This includes the new Elemental tribe, a new “Adapt” mechanic that gives buffs to certain minions, and a Quest mechanic that gives each class an in-game goal to complete for powerful new minions and spells. You can check out all the new cards in our Journey to Un’Goro slideshow.

Patch 8.0 will also pave the way for the Year of the Mammoth: Hearthstone’s new Standard season and the one by which all future Hearthstone Championship Tour competitions will operate under. This rotates out all cards from Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and League of Explorers, as well as six Hearthstone staples that are being inducted into the new Hall of Fame. The Standard year will go into effect when Journey to Un’Goro releases on Thursday.

Maiev Shadowsong also enters the Hearthstone tavern with the new patch. Players can unlock this Rogue hero by winning ten Standard games on either Ranked or Casual modes during the Year of the Mammoth. The new Rogue was first revealed during the original Year of the Mammoth announcement.

The last notable piece of the patch adds a client-side feature for Fireside Gatherings, the social get-togethers for the Hearthstone community. A new closed beta allows players to more easily earn exclusive cardbacks, find new friends, and participate in exclusive Fireside Brawls.

The Year of the Mammoth begins on Thursday. The first esports tournaments to run under the new Standard season will include the TESPA Collegiate National Championship and the DreamHack Hearthstone Grand Prix from DreamHack Austin.
