Public hearing set on Long Island for natural gas terminal proposal off NY-NJ coast
LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) -- The public is being allowed to comment on a plan to build a liquefied natural gas terminal off the New Jersey and New York shorelines.
Liberty Natural Gas has applied to federal authorities for permission to build a port in the ocean 17 miles off Jones Beach, N.Y., and 24 miles off Long Branch, N.J.
The first hearing on the proposal is Tuesday evening in Long Beach, N.Y. A second hearing will be held Wednesday in Edison, N.J.
At least one environmental group, New Jersey-based Clean Ocean Action, has announced its opposition. A county legislator in Nassau County, on Long Island, also is questioning whether the terminal is necessary.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed an earlier proposal in 2011.
Tuesday's hearing is at the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach.
