Hearing reveals third Ibarra brother jailed at ICE detention center in Georgia

Another brother of the man charged with murdering a nursing student on the University of Georgia campus is in federal custody in Georgia, according to information that surfaced this week in a federal hearing in Macon.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Argenis Ibarra, 24, is currently housed in the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. The facility houses detained immigrants for ICE.

Murder suspect Jose A. Ibarra, 26, is charged with killing Laken Riley, 22, who was attending an Augusta University nursing school in Athens. She was slain Feb. 22 while jogging in a forest at the UGA intramural fields off College Station Road.

Ibarra’s oldest brother, Diego Ibarra, 29, is being detained at an undisclosed location. On Thursday, he was denied bond after a federal magistrate ruled he is a flight risk.

All three brothers are charged by ICE with entering the U.S. illegally in April 2023 at the Texas border. All three are from Venezuela.

Diego Ibarra is linked to the violent criminal gang Tren de Aragua, but ICE has not publicly comment on any gang affiliations for Jose Ibarra or his younger brother Argenis Ibarra.

All three were living in Athens and were arrested on the day after Riley’s slaying, according to reports.
