HEAP application deadline fast approaching

ONTARIO — The deadline to apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is May 31. HEAP helps Ohioans at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines pay their heating bills.

Visit energyhelp.ohio.gov to apply, download a copy of the application or find contact information for an energy assistance provider. Senior citizens may go to the Area Agency on Aging office for help with assembling the documents and completing the HEAP application.

Anyone age 18 and older may apply for this assistance. Those 60 and over can get assistance with filling out the application. All heating types are eligible for energy assistance programs.

For more information, including a list of required documents, contact the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging at 419-524-4144 or 800-860-5799. To be connected to a local energy assistance provider, call 800-282-0880 (hearing impaired clients may dial 711 for assistance) or visit energyhelp.ohio.gov.

New York moves to limit kids’ access to ‘addictive feeds’
New York’s state legislature has passed a bill that would prohibit social media companies from showing so-called “addictive feeds” to children under 18, unless they obtain parental consent. The Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act defines an addictive feed as one where the content is recommended or prioritized based on information about the user or the user’s device — basically, these are the algorithmic news feeds used by most social apps. New York Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to sign the bill; her office has already released a statement praising its passage, along with the passage of a related New York Child Data Protection Act, which prohibits online platforms from collecting or selling personal data from users under 18 without informed consent.
