Health system notifies 59 employees of layoffs as EBR Parish School System goes in-house

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)—Our Lady of the Lake Health has notified 59 employees of potential layoffs that could affect them next month. The contract between OLOL and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System will end on Sunday, June 30.

According to a 2024 WARN Notice from the Louisiana Workforce Commission, OLOL notified 59 employees on Friday, April 26. The layoff date listed on the notice for those affected employees is Sunday, June 30.

According to Perry Robinson, director of communications and public relations, EBR Parish School System, the EBR Parish School Board decided during a committee meeting on Thursday, May 9, not to renew the contract with OLOL, which will impact several school-based nurses.

“The decision was made as a cost-saving maneuver for the school system,” said Robinson. “Instead of sourcing the nurses through OLOL, the school system will hire the nurses directly, which could potentially save the district over $900,000 a year.”

Robinson said, “Several people have interviewed for the open positions with the district and/or have participated in one of several FAQ meetings by EBR’s human resources department to learn more about our current openings.”

OLOL released the following statement:

“Health Care Centers in Schools, a part of Our Lady of the Lake Health, has been privileged to serve the children of East Baton Rouge Parish Schools with school-based nurses, medical oversight, and clinics since 2011. We understand the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board’s business decision to bring their individual school nursing program in house and will continue to provide excellent care through the end of our contract term. We look forward to continuing our partnership which includes operation of our seven school-based health centers located on the campuses of East Baton Rouge Parish Schools.

We will work with our impacted team members to transition to opportunities within our health system and we will partner with EBRPS to support team members who are interested in applying for its school nursing program.”
