Health care overhaul could boost claim costs in Texas 33.8 percent for individual policies
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A new study has found that the Affordable Care Act could cause health care claims to jump 33.8 percent in Texas for those who buy individual insurance policies.
The Society of Actuaries released a report on Tuesday showing that the requirement for individuals to buy health insurance will boost costs because of the higher number of sick people making claims.
The authors of the study assumed that every state had agreed to expand Medicaid. But in Texas, Republican leaders have refused to add more people to the health care program for the poor and disabled unless they are allowed to overhaul it.
The Obama administration questioned the results of the study because it did not consider cost-saving efforts or group policies, which most people have through their employer.
