Health leaders host free community baby shower in North Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Aetna Better Health of Louisiana, along with other organizations around the Baton Rouge area, like Fathers On A Mission and My Mommy My Baby, came together to host a free community baby shower to expecting mothers in North Baton Rouge.

This is their third year hosting the event, and the first time inviting the fathers to join and also be celebrated.

“Knowledge is understanding, and once you understand, you make better choices for a healthier, happy you,” said Taressia Ben, community development analyst for Aetna Better Health of Louisiana.

North Baton Rouge is home to many low-income families, and Aetna Better Health of Louisiana wants to help in every way possible to give them the right tools for parenthood.

“We’re making sure that they have what they need because they need it the most, and right now it’s a critical time,” said Ben.

The community baby shower was free to the families who came. They handed out many giveaways like free diapers, clothes, and car seats.

Families were also given vital knowledge on how to properly take care of their baby in the cradle when sleeping and when riding in the car. They offered free workshops for them to attend to get to learn more about how to properly take care of their newborn.

This was not only something that is beneficial for their babies, but for themselves as well.

“You know, a lot of times people deal with situations with mental stress, dealing with pregnancy before and after, so we make sure that we let them know that there are resources here to support them through their journey,” said Levar Robinson, CEO of F.O.A.M.

Our Lady of the Lake gave out free blood pressure screenings to expecting mothers. My Mommy My Baby was there to provide mothers counseling and therapy guides for postpartum depression.

Many of the expecting mothers who attended the event were very grateful for not only the knowledge they received, but also the gifts that were given to them.
