Head women’s basketball coach for Angelina College steps down to teach

LUFKIN, Texas (KETK) – The women’s basketball coach at Angelina College announced he will step into the role of full-time professor.

Coach Byron Coleman said he’s been with the college since 1998, recording more than 300 wins in his head coaching career. According to the college, in the 2023-2024 season, “Coleman’s crew snagged a share of the Region XIV regular-season title — a first in Lady Roadrunner basketball program history. Coleman then was named Region XIV Coach of the Year for his efforts.”

Coleman, a graduate of Angelina College himself, said he felt like now was the best time for him to make the move into an instructor role.

“I truly enjoyed the ride,” Coleman said in a Facebook post. “It’s been a blessing to wake up and do something you love and have a passion for. So for me, I’ve been blessed. Time to spend more time with my family.”

In the post, he thanked his family and former head coach Dwan Coleman for their support.

“Coach Coleman signing out,” the post said. “Professor Coleman logging in.”
