Head Country BBQ gives out hundreds of free meals for OKC line workers

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Once again Head Country BBQ gathered its staff and handed out hundreds of free meals Wednesday for Oklahoma City street crew workers.

“It takes all these people to make a whole city run,” said owner C.R. Head. “When I saw them in the ditch that day I was like man, we’ve got to do something for them.”

Head said that this winter he happened to see some road crew members working in the cold and felt like something needed to be done.

“These guys are big meat eaters and like barbecue so what a great combination,” said Head.

Wednesday just after 11 a.m. they had several grills and pounds of different kinds of meats ready to eat.

“I’ve had so many of these workers stop and tell me what flavors of sauce they keep in their house, it’s amazing,” said Head.

You might recognize this as a similar story and that’s because Head Country BBQ has given out free food several times before.

In 2022 the family threw a BBQ bash that 4th of July weekend in Ponca City. It was a community-wide party that resulted in over 5,000 mouths fed.

“It’s the Oklahoma standard and that’s the Head family,” said Rich Cantillon, the President of the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce then.

That wasn’t the only time either, last year in April the family wanted to show gratitude for healthcare workers. At the time Danny Head, C.R.’s father had just had heart surgery that saved his life.

So, they gave out hundreds of meals for free to healthcare workers.

“I said to them, ‘I’ll tell you what, [if] you get me through this deal and I’ll feed the whole place,’” said Danny Head that day.

The feast held on Wednesday was specifically for OKC workers and C.R. said it was well deserved. Overall he said that they ended up giving out over 350 meals, maybe more.

“They are the unsung heroes I feel like don’t get the thanks they deserve, so, thank you,” said Head.
