HBO scores its 1st drama series Golden Globe in 9 years with Succession

The Roy family emerged victorious at the 2020 Golden Globes, bringing HBO its first win in the top drama series category in almost a decade.

At Sunday's Golden Globes, the award for Best Television Series - Drama went to Succession for its second season, with this coming nine years after Boardwalk Empire won the prize for HBO. The network previously won the Golden Globe drama series award for Six Feet Under and The Sopranos.

Game of Thrones was repeatedly nominated at the Golden Globes but never won in this category, despite its success at the Emmys. It wasn't nominated at the Golden Globes this year for its final season, although Kit Harington received a nod in the lead actor category.

Succession earned this top honor despite not actually being nominated in the Golden Globes category during its first season. This is the most high-profile award to be received by the acclaimed series so far, and with Game of Thrones over, Succession could be headed for domination at the Emmys later this year.
