Up and at 'em, Toledo! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right. Here are the most important things going on around town today.

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. Toledo Police responded to an incident Wednesday night after 42-year-old Thomas Allen shot himself in the hand following an argument with his wife. Allen told police the gun was in his pocket and went off during the argument. He was booked in the Lucas County Jail on domestic violence charges after receiving treatment at the hospital. (13abc Action News)

  2. Matzinger Road was closed Thursday morning for a hazardous materials situation. A propane tank used to warm the CSX train tracks was hit by a car, rolled on its side, and began leaking. Toledo Fire & Rescue emergency crews responded and no evacuations were necessary. (13abc Action News)

  3. Toledo Police are seeking help from the community to identify a man accused of threatening employees and stealing items at a Rite-Aid on Monroe Street. The man is accused of threatening to hit a female employee and further stated he would return and harm her before leaving in a gray Chevy Impala with Ohio plates GJR2575. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111. (WTOL)

  4. Hollywood Casino Toledo is expanding with a new section dubbed "The Barstool Sportsbook" in anticipation of legalized sports betting due this year. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed the bill into law in December, following the lead of neighboring states Michigan and Indiana. (WTOL)

  5. The City of Toledo and the University of Toledo are bringing a number of meaningful celebrations in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year. The Unity Day Celebration will be held virtually on the holiday, with presentations by the Scott High School Choir, the Toledo Opera, MADD Poets Society, and more. Also on Monday, the Toledo Museum of Art will host events including youth crafts and a projection of King's "I have a Dream" speech. (WNWO NBC 24)

  • Toledo homeless shelters are coping with dropping temperatures and rising COVID-19 cases. Several shelters, such as St. Paul's Community Center, need help with funding as residents are displaced to hotels to prevent further infection. (13abc Action News)

  • Toledo residents may qualify for some rent relief through the Toledo-Lucas County Emergency Rental Assistance Program. Eligible households could receive up to 18 months of assistance with current, future, and past due rent and late fees. (WTOL)

  • A Waite High School student was found with a BB gun in their locker on Wednesday. The student could face charges, but no specific threats were reported. (WTOL)
