Haudenosaunee Confederacy's formation coincided with total solar eclipse event

Over 800 years ago the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy was established during a total solar eclipse.

Before the United States created its Constitution, Indigenous nations among the Fingerlakes and five northeast woodlands tribes formed what’s known as the Iroquois or Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

The Haudenosaunee meaning “people of the long house”, originally included the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca nations. The Tuscarora nation became the sixth nation to join in the 1700s. They created their constitution, the Great Law of Peace, as a way to govern the nations through federalism, separation of powers and participatory democracy. Their principles went on to inspire leaders during the formation of the US Constitution.

Scientists estimate the emergence of the confederacy took place in the year 1142, during a total solar eclipse near Victor.

Here are some eclipse events that will be celebrating the Confederacy:

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

On Monday, April 8, families can enjoy educational and artistic activities, look at wildlife and view the total solar eclipse at the refuge. There will be light refreshments and restrooms provided.

Time: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Location: 1101 Casey Rd, Basom, NY 14013

Ganondagan State Historic Site

Experience the eclipse through the history of the Haudenosaunee and learn the science behind it. Guests can enjoy Native American storytelling and a group discussion following the totality at Fort Hill located near the intersection of Boughton Hill Road and Murray Road.

Time: Noon - 5 p.m.
