Hartland High's Aquatic Center reopens after $870K renovation

HARTLAND — The Hartland High School competitive and leisure pools are back in operation following a $870,000 renovation that took just six weeks to complete.

The pools closed March 18 and reopened May 1 following several structural and aesthetic upgrades, including a new humidification and ventilation system, LED lighting, roof repairs and a fresh coat of paint throughout both pools, including aquatic toys in the leisure pool. The competitive pool’s scoreboard was also replaced.

The upgrades were funded by the 2020 bond passage and the district’s general maintenance fund, according to Hartland Schools’ Director of Transportation and Operations Matt Marino. The cost of painting the two pool areas cost $122,000 alone. Third-party vendors completed most of the work, with the district’s operations team handling various mechanical upgrades and maintenance, including filter cleanings.

“It was a great time for us to handle those annual tasks ... given the pools were completely closed,” Marino said.

By completing the project at the start of May, the pools are primed for their busy season of summer vacation birthday parties, swimming lessons and more, said Hartland Schools Director of Community Education Carol Hayes.

“The first day we reopened, we already had a birthday party held (at the leisure pool)," Hayes said. “There’s a lot of demand for the pools this time of year.”

Demand also includes swim lessons and open pool hours for adults and children, a “splash and play” program for families and adult exercise classes, Hayes said.
