Ever since 2001 when the very first film came out, we’ve been waiting for the Harry Potter franchise to win an Oscar. It’s been nominated for 12 Academy Awards over the years but no Harry Potter films have ever actually won. After the final movie released we had all but given up on a Harry Potter Oscar, but the 2017 Academy Awards have been a game changer.

The 2016 Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which starred Eddie Redmayne, brought joy and anticipation to all the loyal Harry Potter fans around the world, so although it’s not technically a Harry Potter movie, we hold in our hearts as if it were. That’s why we’re beyond thrilled that Fantastic Beasts just won Best Costume Design at the 2017 Academy Awards.

It was up against Allied, Florence Foster Jenkins, Jackie, and La La Land. It was Colleen Atwood who took home the Oscar, though, who has also worked on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and The Silence Of the Lambs.

Not unexpectedly, fans are freaking about it. Because we’ve waited long enough.

Of course, there were some Harry Potter fans who simultaneously expressed joy about the Oscar and also disbelief in the fact that it’s 2017 and Harry Potter — er, Fantastic Beasts — is just being awarded for the first time.

We’re there with you. To say it’s “overdue” is an understatement. Now can we please borrow Hermione’s time turner to rewind and give Harry Potter the recognition it deserves?!
