Harrisburg School District superintendent up for Central Dauphin superintendent position

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Central Dauphin School District has announced that on Monday, May 20 at the School Board meeting Eric Turman, current Harrisburg School District superintendent, will be recommended for a vote for his election as superintendent for CDSD.

“The search process has been thoughtful and rigorous, and I want to thank the board, our consultants, parents and the administration for their time, commitment and effort to make certain we could recommend an outstanding candidate for the position,” said Mike Jacobs, school board president.

Turman has served as superintendent for the Harrisburg School District for three years. Before then he was the principal of Reading High School for a decade. He spent over 20 years with the RHS district where he started as a fifth-grade teacher.

Turrman would receive a five-year contract under the current proposed agreement.

The CDSD search for a superintendent began back in December. CDSD hired Keystone Superintendent Search Service to assist in the process. Former superintendents Mark DiRocco and Connie Kindler were both helped with the search.

Staff, parents/guardians and community members were asked to fill out a survey in January about what they were hoping for in a new superintendent. 898 people responded.

The search service sent the information about the position to a database consisting of over 600 current and aspiring superintendents and contacted those who matched the profile they were seeking. The consultants met with the Central Dauphin School District Parent Advisory Committee for input on March 21.

The consultants reviewed 22 applications and the board then chose five that best matched the profile being sought. First-round interviews were conducted on April 24 and 25. From those, three finalists were chosen.

19 randomly selected staff then participated in a “Meet and Greet” with the finalists on May 8.

The Board of Directors then chose Turman as the best candidate.

The board meeting will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. in the East High School auditorium

Dr. Norman Miller resigned as CDSD superintendent on Feb. 1. Assistant superintendent Aaron McConnell has been serving as interim superintendent since then.

The Harrisburg School District released a statement on Friday that said, in part, “The Harrisburg School District is completely committed to ensuring that any leadership transitions occur thoughtfully and with full support for our students and staff. Central Dauphin’s School Board is expected to vote on the superintendent position on Monday, May 20. After that time, we will share additional information with our own school community regarding next steps in our leadership plans, including the timelines.”
