  • March 8-10 Cirque du Soleil: CRYSTAL – This event starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

  • March 9 Saturday Farmers Market – The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is open year-round on Saturdays in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.

  • March 9 2024 Silver City Farmers’ Market – It’s happening at 1120 N. Main St. in Silver City from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

  • March 10 Sunday Chess Club – Popolo’s Games in Taos will host this free chess club open to all ages beginning at 1:00 p.m.

  • March 10 Spring Red Enchilada Fundraiser – Los Indigenes de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe is hosting their annual enchilada fundraiser from 10:00 am. to 4:00 p.m. in the Tortugas Pueblo at 894 Guadalupe St. in Las Cruces.

  • March 10 Secondhand Treasures 13th Anniversary Sale – The Southwest Animal Rescue Fund’s thrift shop is celebrating 13 years at 4627 Corrales Rd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Corrales.

  • March 11 New Mexican Appreciation Day at Meow Wolf – Enjoy half-price entry into the House of Eternal Return at Santa Fe’s Meow Wolf for New Mexican residents.

  • March 11-12 BANFF Mountain Film Festival – Monday and Tuesday, the festival starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Lensic Theatre in Santa Fe.

  • March 12 Spring into Action Blood Drive – The blood drive will be on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Gallup at 308 E. Route 66.

🔶 Isotopes mascot, Orbit, nominated for USA Today’s 10 Best – USA Today is running a poll to determine which Minor League Baseball mascots are the nation’s favorites. Albuquerque’s own Isotopes mascot, Orbit, is in the running. Voting for USA Today’s 10 Best MILB Mascots is open until Monday, March 11, at 10 a.m. M.T. and fans can vote once each day until then.

🔶 Albuquerque BioPark hosting special sensory-friendly night – The Albuquerque BioPark is hosting a sensory-friendly night on Friday, March 8 at the aquarium from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Tickets are limited and will be $5 per ticket. Guests can enjoy a night of sensory-friendly activities including, a map, special crafts a a quiet room, and a sensory-friendly kit that guests can check out.

🔶 Pre-lease applications open for new affordable housing complex in Albuquerque – The city is in the process of converting the former SureStay Hotel off of Lomas and Eubank Boulevards into apartments. About 30 apartments are expected to be open in the spring. The city and property manager Monarch Properties Inc. are accepting applications for one-bedroom apartments.

🔶 Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department debuts shelter data dashboard – The dashboard on Tuesday showed that the department was nearing its maximum daily capacity with a total of 720 animals in the shelter. The dog capacity also neared its maximum with 544 dogs being sheltered.

🔶 Low-income housing units in the South Valley get renovations – El Centro Familiar Senior Housing got an upgrade with new windows, sliding glass doors, improved sidewalks, thermostats, walk-in showers, gutters, and roofing. In total, 75 units were improved. The remodel was funded by over $1 million from the community development block grant.

🔶 Albuquerque International Sunport to receive $5.8M grant for upgrades – The Albuquerque International Sunport applied for an FAA Build Infrastructure Legislation Airports Terminal Grant to design an outbound baggage system and support spaces to develop an inline system. The Sunport said the project should take around six to nine months to complete.

🔶 Albuquerque City Council rejects proposal for outside investigation into APD Chief’s crash – The chief said he was on his way to a news conference last month when he said he heard a gunshot and drove against the light into an intersection hitting and badly injuring another driver. The proposal from City Councilor Louie Sanchez would have asked an outside agency like New Mexico State Police or Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

🔶 Explora Spring Break Camps – Explora is offering Spring Break camps on March 22, 25-29, and April 1-5. They will provide STEAM camps for Pre-K, K-2nd Grade, and 3-5th Grade groups.

🔶 New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Spring Camps – Camps are happening March 25-29 and April 1-5 and are for children between the ages of 5 and 10.

🔶 National Reading Month: The most popular books checked out from Albuquerque libraries in 2023 – The public library said that 3,651,404 books were rented last year from its 19 branches. The top 10 most checked-out books in the adult, teen, and children sections can be found below.

New Mexico Notices

🔶 New Mexico looking for contractors to help with tax prep – New Mexico’s Taxation and Revenue Department is looking for contractors to provide income tax help for New Mexicans in need. Contractors need to respond to the RFP by 3:00 p.m. on March 12. Finalists for the work will be selected by March 15.

🔶 New Mexico governor approves omnibus tax bill – The upcoming changes include restructured income tax brackets. The restructuring focuses on decreasing income tax for low and middle-income New Mexicans.

🔶 Upcoming 4-H rodeos for 2024 – So far, San Juan County, Quay County, and Sierra County have submitted applications to host rodeos this year. There’s still time for more counties to join in (the deadline is March 15).

🔶 2 Rio Rancho City Council positions headed to runoff election – In District 6, Nicole Dahn leads the pack with more than 200 votes over her next competitor Edward Lynn Paulsgrove but she did not get the 50% vote needed. Paul M. Wymer is the new District 5 councilor with 54% of the votes. The runoff elections for city council will be on April 9.

🔶 Four gun, crime-related bills signed by governor at Albuquerque high school – In front of a crowd at West Mesa High School, which has seen its share of gun problems in recent years, the governor and lawmakers touted the four gun and crime reform bills that made it across the finish line.

🔶 New Mexico ECECD launches grant program to improve child care centers – Through the new CRECER (Capacity Resources for Enhancing Care, Excellence, and Resilience) initiative, qualifying licensed centers can get up to $10,000 per classroom for renovations, repairs, training to increase staff qualifications, purchasing safety equipment, and more.

🔶 New Mexico Military Institute students head to DC to compete in National Science Bowl finals – The team from the New Mexico Military Institute secured their spot and an all-expenses-paid trip to the finals after winning a qualifying regional competition this past weekend. The National Finals will take place from April 25- 29, in Washington, D.C., and will include science activities and sightseeing, along with the competitions.

🔶 Roswell becomes finalist to host National Championship Air Races – The National Championship Air Races are a one-of-a-kind air racing event that has brought an estimated $100 million in annual economic impact to its current home in northern Nevada, according to a news release from the Reno Air Racing Association. The two other cities being considered are Pueblo, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming.

🔶 New Mexico license plate earns top spot in national rankings – Monti Lopez with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division says the plate was chosen due to its unique color scheme. This isn’t the first time a New Mexico plate has been recognized. Lopez says the chile plate took top honors in 2017.

🔶 Two Tribal communities in New Mexico receive funding to connect homes to electricity – The Office of Indian Affairs’ Tribal Electrification Program will provide $14.5 million in financial and technical assistance to the Pueblo of Santa Ana in New Mexico. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah will receive $10 million in funding.
