‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season Finale Leaves Fans Wanting More

The season finale of The Handmaid’s Tale was just as gut-wrenching and hard-hitting as the rest of the Hulu original series but with a sense that there was major change on the horizon for Offred, who is played by Mad Men alum Elisabeth Moss.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel of the same name, the screen adaptation has delighted fans and perhaps made them a bit uneasy at the parallels between Gilead and the world we currently live in. Moss joked in an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, “It’s about a right-wing totalitarian fundamentalist regime that takes over the country. Women are enslaved and made to be breeding hostings. All reproductive rights are stripped, and the constitution is blown to bits. So I don’t know if you could imagine such a world.”

In the runup to the season finale, “handmaids” were spotted walking around Los Angeles, in an apparent social media campaign to bolster the show’s chances at an Emmy award.

In this final episode, Mrs. Waterford discovered that Offred has been going to a brothel with the Commander and that she was miraculously pregnant, but by their driver, Nick. In a power play, Mrs. Waterford revealed to Offred that she knows where her missing daughter is.

In the previous episode, Handmaid Janine had nearly killed herself by jumping off a bridge with her daughter but chose to hand the child to Offred before jumping into the ice-cold water. Janine survived, however, and in this episode, the handmaids were ordered to stone her to death. In a rebellious spirit, Offred dropped the first stone, saying, “I’m sorry, Aunt Lydia” (played by Ann Dowd), and all the other handmaids dropped their stones as well.

In the very end, Offred was taken away from the Waterfords and into a mysterious black van. Her fate was unknown, but we are all excited to see where Season 2 will take her.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available on Hulu.
