The Handmaid's Tale star Ever Carradine has been promoted to a series regular for the show's final season.

The actor first joined the hit dystopian drama as recurring character Naomi Putnam in season one, while starring as a series regular on Marvel's Runaways.

Across the show's five seasons, Carradine has appeared in 20 episodes (via Deadline).

Naomi was originally married to Commander Putnam (Stephen Kunken), and later became the adoptive mother of a daughter that their Handmaid, Janine (Madeline Brewer), gave birth to.

The character was then widowed in season five, before she married Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford).

The Handmaid's Tale was renewed for a sixth season ahead of the show's season five premiere in September 2022, with show bosses confirming that June's (Elisabeth Moss) heartbreaking journey would finally come to a close.

"It has been a true honour to tell the story of Margaret Atwood's groundbreaking novel and the chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale," said the show's creator, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller in a statement.

"We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and we are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point."

Production for season six will begin this summer, with the show set to return in 2025. Filming was initially set to begin in 2023 for an autumn 2024 premiere, but last year's Hollywood strikes significantly delayed proceedings.

Meanwhile, a spin-off series based on Margaret Atwood's novel The Testaments is currently in development and is said to pick up years after the end of season 6.

The Handmaid's Tale streams on Hulu in the US and both Channel 4 and Prime Video in the UK.
