Hampton police give update on officer struck by vehicle Monday night

ATLANTA - A metro Atlanta police officer was seriously injured after he was struck by a vehicle while working late Monday night.

The City of Hampton Police Department said that 39-year-old Duane Jones was working on an off-duty construction detail directing traffic when he was struck by a vehicle around 10:30 p.m. May 20.

Medics airlifted Jones to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The officer was listed as critical but stable on Monday night.

During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the police department said the officer has multiple injuries, but they are thankful they are not worse than they are and that he is still alive.

Injuries include a fractured hip, several fractured ribs, a fractured fibula and fractured vertebra.

The mayor of Hampton thanked everyone for their support and asked the community to lift up Officer Jones in their prayers.

The Georgia State Patrol is in charge of the investigation. No details were given about the driver of the vehicle that struck the vehicle and it is unknown if the driver will face charges.

Hampton's police chief did say that it is important for drivers to pay attention to the road and what is happening around them when they are driving.
