Hampton girls fall in state title game 68-58
RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — A sea of red and black flooded the Siegel Center, as both the Hampton boys and girls looked to bring home state championships. While the Crabbers boys were able to pull out a state title, the girls fell to Loudoun County’s Woodgrove 68-58 in the Class 4 state championship.
Woodgrove’s only loss this season came to Phoenix, Arizona’s Desert Vista.
The defense was stifling in the opening frame, and wasn’t friendly to the Crabbers. Hampton went scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes, and only broke the scoreless streak on free throws. They didn’t score their first basket until only 2:22 remaining in the first quarter with a baseline jumper from Lyla Ames.
The first quarter ended 9-9, and then the game started to open up a little bit in the second for Woodgrove.
May Marsh hit back-to-back 3s early in the second to help the Crabbers. She went 2-for-4 on 3s in the quarter, but the Wolverines went into the locker room up 29-21 at half, and they never really looked back from there.
The Crabbers kept it close for basically the entire game, but the story of this state championship came down to two crucial things — rebounding and 3-point shooting.
The Wolverines were able to get plenty of second chance opportunities after grabbing 55 rebounds, 27 of which were on the offensive glass.
Getting those second chance opportunities led to points in bunches, especially from beyond the arc, as Woodgrove made seven 3s and shot 43% from the field in the fourth quarter.
Despite double-digit efforts from Dreyana Foster and Kaliya Perry, Hampton was not able to rally.
