Halifax Health plans to open another location in Port Orange with new medical office and emergency room buildings by year's end.

Port Orange city staff, who refer to the project as the “Halifax Health at Oakwater development," met with contractors over the past few weeks to discuss on- and off-site construction work. Pre-construction work is set to begin in "early February."

The property is located at the northeast corner of Williamson Boulevard and Oakwater Lane, just outside the Ashton Lakes subdivision.

"Halifax Health has served the Port Orange community and as the community grows, we are aware of the need to provide access to the highest level of care in the area," John Guthrie, Halifax Health's spokesman, wrote in an email to The News-Journal. "Purchasing land on Airport Road is our effort to provide access and choice for the people of southeast Volusia County."

The project includes "a 7,000-square-foot medical office building, a 8,961-square-foot commercial multi-tenant building, and an 8,950-square-foot free-standing emergency room building (no overnight stays),” according to a recent report from Port Orange City Manager Wayne Clark. “There are no changes proposed to the 285-foot-wide wooded conservation area between the subject property and the homes in the Ashton Lakes subdivision.”

Guthrie said the project will start with the construction of the free-standing emergency room building, which will be called Halifax Health Emergency Department – Port Orange South.

"This care offering will provide 24-7 emergency care for patients in the southeast," he wrote. "Building an emergency department on the south side of Port Orange will provide seamless care for patients through the entire Halifax Health care continuum."

The project will also involve "creating physician, nursing and allied health career opportunities."

"As the need arises, we will monitor the growth and provide additional healthcare services as the community asks for them," Guthrie added.

The contractor will begin installing silt fence around the site this month after the required supervised relocation of any gopher tortoises, as permitted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, is completed.

Site clearing is expected to begin soon after.

Halifax Health's new emergency room is expected to open in the "fourth quarter of 2024," according to Guthrie.

Halifax Health opened its latest location in the city in 2022 — a Halifax Health ExpressCare facility at Belvedere Medical Park, which is also home to Radiology Associates, Halifax Health Primary Care and Halifax Health Pediatric Care.
