Hal Weatherman wins Republican runoff for NC lieutenant governor

North Carolina is one step closer to electing a new round of representatives this November with the primary runoffs ending on Tuesday.

Although runoffs are not required, a second-place candidate was able to request one if no candidate received more than 30% of the vote in the first primary.

Here are the results for the Republican runoffs for lieutenant governor, state auditor, the 13th congressional district and South Point Township District on the Gaston County Board of Commissioners.

Lieutenant governor

Republican Hal Weatherman won in the runoff against Jim O’Neill with about 74% of the vote, according to unofficial election results. Weatherman is the founder and president of the Electoral Education Foundation and previous chief of staff for Lt. Gov. Dan Forest and U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick.

Though the first primary was a close race, with O'Neill, a Forsyth County District Attorney, only trailing behind Weatherman by about 4 percentage points, the runoff showed a clear path to victory for Weatherman.

In November, he will face Democratic nominee Rachel Hunt, current North Carolina senator in Mecklenburg County.
