Hailey Baldwin Chimes in on the Whole ‘Are They/Aren’t They’ Supermodel Debate

Ask anyone under the age of 25 who the top models in the fashion industry are right now, and you’re likely to hear back a shortlist of some of the most followed It Girls on social media. Of course there are your Kendall Jenners and Gigi Hadids, not to mention Bella Hadid who opened almost every runway show she walked in this season, but amongst that elite group of top models is also newcomer Hailey Baldwin. Although she’s only landed two coversw and walked in eight runway shows so far, her career is finally starting to really take off. And much like her catwalk strutting contemporaries the model has a thing or two to say about those old guard supermodels who say this generation isn’t worthy of the moniker.

Although Hailey admitted back in July that she wasn’t a supermodel, clearly she’s had a slight change of heart since booking a few more runway shows and editorials. According to Yahoo Style, in her new cover interview with Harper’s Bazaar Australia, the model touched on the subject that has been plaguing her and her fellow Instagram famous BFFs — the way models from the ’90s like Rebecca Romijn and Stephanie Seymour have cast aspersions about the legitimacy of these new girls applying the term “supermodel” to themselves.

She told the magazine, “The older supermodels sometimes don’t agree with the fact there is a new generation of models,” insisting that, “We’re not saying we’re supermodels.”

Baldwin continued, “I’d rather people look at us as business people, and, yes, modeling is our business right now, but we’re not trying to take anybody’s spot and we’re not trying to discredit the past.” She also added that while she’s been repeatedly told throughout her career that she’ll never be as successful as Kate Moss, she insists she’s a “completely different individual” and is more interested in carving out her own career path rather than following in someone else’s footsteps. Unless, of course, those footsteps happen to belong to KenGi.
