Hagerstown rolls out welcome mat for service veterans seeking jobs

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Armed forces veterans looking for work in the Hagerstown area gathered near city hall on Tuesday to meet with Maryland Labor Department officials who may help with job placement.

Mayor Tekesha Martinez welcomed the gathering from both the public and private sectors.

“We’re looking to place job seekers in stables, impactful employment suitable for our veterans,” said Michael Bowers with the state veterans commission. “We have business partners from the community, nonprofits here who are going to commit to investing in jobs for veterans.”

To complement the job placement program, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is coordinating with local businesses for informal gatherings at coffee shops around the region to bring job seekers with a military background together with prospective employers.
