Hagerstown man ordered to serve 19 years for sexual assault of girl

A Hagerstown man was ordered on Monday to serve 19 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a girl in Frederick and Montgomery counties, according to the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office.

Nicholas Wayne Summers, 42, was sentenced to 40 years, suspending 21 years per a plea agreement reached by his attorney, Leonard Gutkoska, and prosecutors.

Summers pleaded guilty on March 6 to two counts of second-degree rape.

Gutkoska did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Upon his release, Summers have five years of specialized sex offender supervision, the release said. He will also be under lifetime sex offender supervision and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The release said in May 2023, a Frederick County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a call for sexual assault of a minor.

The mother of the child told the deputy that her daughter made a social media post about a traumatic incident she experienced in the past.

The mother talked to her daughter, the release said, and learned that Summers sexually assaulted her in both Montgomery and Frederick counties, a news release from the state's attorney's office said.
