Habitat for Humanity to open ReStore location in York County this spring

A new Habitat for Humanity ReStore location is slated to open its doors in York County this spring.

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg recently announced plans to open its third ReStore location on Route 17.

“We believe we have found the perfect location for customers to shop that also has a convenient drive-thru drop-off for donations,” Habitat CEO Janet. V. Green said in a news release. “We know there are a lot of generous people who would like to donate items as well as shop for good deals along the busy Route 17 corridor in Yorktown.”

Habitat ReStores are home improvement and donation centers that sell new and used furniture, appliances and building materials at reduced costs. All proceeds from the ReStores go toward other initiatives that support the organization’s community mission, such as building homes through its Homebuyer Program. Green said that Habitat has set the goal of “building at least one more house each year with ReStore proceeds, but obviously, we would like to do even more than that.”

The 13,000-square-foot Yorktown store will be located at 4824 George Washington Memorial Highway, next to Langley Federal Credit Union. The Williamsburg location is the largest in Virginia at 40,000 square feet while the Newport News store is 23,000 square feet. Both locations rank in the top 25 among 900 ReStores nationally, according to Habitat.

“We might be smaller, but we intend to make a big impact,” said Gary McFadden, who will manage the new store. “Hello, Yorktown!”

Habitat for Humanity previously operated a ReStore drop-off donation center in Yorktown. The drop-off donation center closed in 2017.

The new store is seeking volunteers to help with renovation before the official grand opening. Those 16 and older who are interested in volunteering can contact McFadden at gary@habitatpgw.org.

“The Yorktown area was so great in the community as a donation center that it made a lot of sense to try to find a retail space there,” Steve Russell, director of the Williamsburg ReStore, said in the release. “People would come in looking to shop there. Now we have a place for them to do that.”

Like the other ReStores, the Yorktown ReStore will offer free donation pickup, expected to begin soon.
