PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon-based women’s wellness brand is suing actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand Goop over trademark infringement.

Oregon brand Good Clean Love was founded by Wendy Strgar in Eugene in 2002, about six years before Paltrow’s company got its start as a weekly lifestyle newsletter.

Goop now sells a variety of lifestyle and wellness products, ranging from cleansing balms to chocolate-mint-flavored melatonin gummies. The Oregon company offers similar items, such as foaming feminine wash and “love oil.”

In the complaint filed on behalf of Good Clean Love on March 28, Goop is being sued for false advertising and unfair competition, in addition to trademark infringement.

“This lawsuit seeks to prevent the calamitous situation where a junior trademark user, with substantial economic power, saturates the marketplace with a trademark that threatens to overtake a smaller senior user’s mark and usurp the senior user’s reputation and goodwill,” attorneys with law firm Cozen O’Connor wrote.

According to the court documents, Goop registered “Good. Clean. Goop” as a trademark in August 2023. Later in November, the brand started using the trademark to sell an affordable version of its clean beauty products.

The new line is now sold at retailers like Target and Amazon — where Good Clean Love sells its own products.

Plaintiffs also alleged the “Good. Clean. Goop” name has been used in connection with sexual health products, which are a pillar of the Oregon business.

The lawsuit argues Paltrow’s brand oversaturates the market and confuses customers. Goop could hinder the smaller company’s efforts to expand with a new line of sexual health and wellness products, according to the complaint.

“…Goop has been criticized for marketing products and treatments that are based on pseudoscience, are harmful, and do not work; has been sued by the State of California and named in numerous class action lawsuits for making unfounded health claims about its products; and has sold new-age and questionable products in the sexual wellness space,” attorneys added.
