Gwinn teen arrested after half-hour police chase

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WJMN) — An 18-year-old from Gwinn was arrested after being the second teenager to lead officers on a chase in Marquette County this week.

A public information officer with Michigan State Police say it was shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday when troopers on US-41 saw a truck speeding, passing, and tailgating other drivers. They also say they saw the driver of the truck run a red light at US-41 and McClellan.

Troopers turned on their lights and siren to pull the truck over, but the driver took off south on McClellan according to police.

Due to a newly-enacted policy, the MSP troopers did not give chase. We’re told it was officers from the Marquette City Police Department who also spotted the truck and continued attempts to pull the driver over before initiating a chase.

The MSP spokesperson tells us the pursuit passed through Chocolay Township before ending in West Branch Township about half an hour later.

It is unclear how the chase ended, but police say an 18-year-old man from Gwinn was taken into custody shortly before 7 p.m., and was lodged at the Marquette County Jail. He is charged with several counts of Fleeing and Eluding, one count of Resisting and Obstructing, and Operating Without a License.
