GVSU wins GLIAC tournament championship

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Being the GLIAC regular season champion wasn’t enough for Grand Valley State women’s basketball.

The Lakers secured the GLIAC tournament championship Sunday, beating Northern Michigan 67-48.

Just one week before, GVSU and Northern Michigan needed to go into overtime. This time, the Lakers never trailed. They started hot, going up 12-3 to open the game. Northern fought back to get within two points at 15-13 late in the first quarter, but Rylie Bisballe made a 3-pointer with five seconds left to put GVSU up 18-13.

Grand Valley grew its lead to 10 within the first two minutes of the second quarter. For every UNM bucket, the Lakers answered with more. Northern Michigan began the second half on a 6-2 run, making it a seven-point game, 42-35. However, it was all GVSU after that. It ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 54-37 with one quarter left.

The lead never got below 15 points through the entire fourth quarter, and the Lakers ended with a 19-point win.

Rylie Bisballe finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and was named the GLIAC tournament MVP.

It’s the Lakers’ second-straight GLIAC tournament championship. They don’t have to wait long to find out where else they’ll play in March. The Division II March Madness selection show is Sunday night at 10:30.
