A would-be burglar got a dose of Robin Hood-style vengeance, when he was shot in the butt by an arrow while trying to flee.

New South Wales Police in Australia are investigating a case in which an intruder broke into the home of a 68-year-old man and his wife Sunday, in the Sydney suburb of Wattle Grove.

The unidentified intruder stole cash and valuables from the bedroom while the couple were at home. He then took the couple's car keys, then went to the garage where he started the car and began to reverse out of the property.

It was then the male resident decided to get medieval on his arse, arming himself with a compound bow and arrow and confronting the intruder in his car. Naturally, the freaked-out intruder abandoned the car and jumped a fence.

But our swash-buckling hero of a home owner simply stepped up onto the fence, like a daring Katniss Everdeen and shot the intruder smack in the "buttocks or lower back area," according to police.

Not taken down, the intruder managed to make his escape in a waiting, second car.

Turns out the resident is part of an archery club and "takes part in that sport," Detective Inspector Dean Johnstone told ABC News

Police have warned others about confronting intruders with other such timeless weaponry in future, however.

Nearby medical facilities have been asked to report anyone with injuries "consistent with the incident." But we're guessing it'd be really hard to convince doctors an arrow wound in your butt was something else.
