Gunman kills multiple co-workers at Maryland factory

STORY: A gunman opened fire on his co-workers at a manufacturing facility in northern Maryland on Thursday, killing multiple people before being taken into custody after a shootout with police.

Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore did not immediately identify the 23-year-old assailant, but told a news conference a state trooper stopped him as he was trying to flee.

“The suspect had fled the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival. The vehicle was encountered by the Maryland state police on Mapleville Road route 66 on the area of Mount Etna Road. The suspect and the trooper exchanged fire, both subjects were injured.”

The sheriff said they were both taken to a local hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

He added the shooter used a semi-automatic pistol handgun but would not give details on the possible motives behind the attack.

“At this time, I can confirm that all the victims and the suspects were current employees of the Colombia Machine Incorporated.”

A company spokesperson said they were cooperating with authorities on the investigation and declined to comment further.
