Gunfire damages window at Northwest Side charter school with students in building

Gunfire damaged a window of a public charter school Tuesday morning on the city’s Northwest Side, according to police and school leadership.

Chicago police said no one was hurt during the shooting at Intrinsic School’s Belmont campus in the Irving Park neighborhood about 9:20 a.m.

Intrinsic Schools CEO Melissa Zaikos confirmed the school in the 4500 block of West Belmont Avenue had been hit and that there were no injuries. At the time of the shooting, students were in the building taking the PSAT, Zaikos said.

Police do not believe the school was targeted and a normal dismissal took place after students finished their test, Zaikos added.

Intrinsic Schools runs a second campus in Chicago’s Loop. Its Irving Park location is the older of the two and the flagship campus, according to the school’s website.

Police said no one was in custody and that Area 5 detectives were investigating the shooting. Chicago Public Schools’ safety and security team was also investigating the damage, Zaikos said.
