Gumbo cook-off to benefit charity: Gumbo Ya-Ya returns to downtown Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — Foodies and chefs can support a charity by attending an event featuring “the best gumbo in Pensacola.”

Gumbo Ya-Ya is set to come to Seville Quarter in downtown Pensacola on Saturday, April 20, from 4-6 p.m.

The event, benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, will feature a cooking competition of amateur and professional teams aiming to make the best gumbo.

Each team’s gumbo will be judged based on taste, smell, color, and consistency. Trophies will be awarded to the top three winners, and the winning team will have bragging rights for “the best gumbo in Pensacola,” according to the release. There will also be a Showmanship trophy given for best decoration and entertainment and a People’s Choice trophy.

Entry for the competition is $20 per three-person team and is limited to 15 teams. Each team must prepare their gumbo “from scratch” at Seville Quarter, according to the release. Cooking is set to begin at 11 a.m. and judging and public tasting will begin at 4 p.m.
