The Gulf Breeze baseball team no longer has a head coach.

Dolphins athletic director Matt Alt confirmed that this morning, former head coach Travis Mattair resigned, with his resignation accepted by principal Danny Brothers.

Freshman coach Bryant Cobb has been named the interim head coach for the Dolphins' likely state playoff bid.

This all comes on the heels of Gulf Breeze's disqualification from the District 1-5A Tournament.

In their semifinal matchup versus Milton, the Dolphins allowed sophomore pitcher Jacob Thorn to throw 112 pitches. According to the Florida High School Athletic Association, pitchers ages 15 and 16 are allowed a maximum of 95 pitches per outing.

"There was a misinterpretation of the rule, which there shouldn't have been," Alt said. "It's pretty black and white, but on the coach's end there was a misinterpretation."

When the FHSAA caught wind of this rule breakage, they disqualified the team from moving forward to the championship game.

This shut down the team's chance at a third-straight district championship, making Pine Forest this year's winner by default.
