Sly Stallone Confirmed, Star Lord’s Parents’ Sex Life Discussed In Hilarious ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’ Trailer – Comic-Con

Shocking no one, rumors about Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 turned out to be true: Kurt Russell is playing Star Lord’s dad who turns out to be Ego, the Living Planet. Oh, and Sylvester Stallone is in the film too. In other words, Tango & Cash are reuniting in the Marvel Universe.

The reveals came courtesy of a new trailer for Guardians 2 tonight near the end of Marvel’s Hall H panel capping off the Guardians Of The Galaxy portion of the event. You’ll be able to watch the trailer here as soon as Disney makes it available.

James Gunn oversaw the Guardians presentation like a carnival barker or a reigning NBA champ returning to his hometown after winning the title. Chatty, confident and as loose as a game show host, he was joined onstage by stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Rooker, and to the massive delight of everyone attending, Russell himself.

Before the trailer the Guardians crew debuted the first footage from the film, a full scene featuring Yondu (Rooker) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) escaping from a jail cell in what looks like a massive space station with the help of Baby Groot (that’s what they’re calling him this time out). Groot it seems is being kept as a pet by the captors who declare him “too adorable to kill,” absolutely true by the way as he looks like something out of the Playstaion game Little Big Planet. The captors are, alas, abusive to poor baby groot and once he helps Yondu and Rocket escape, he exacts delicious, adorable revenge on the leader. The scene makes it clear Guardians 2 is leaning far more heavily on the “13” part of PG-13, with an impressive body count courtesy of Yondu’s whistle-controlled projectile.

It’s a great scene, but it was very much overshadowed by the trailer.

In a nutshell, the trailer makes it clear Guardians 2 is aiming to be everything you loved about Guardians 1 but even more. It kicks off with plenty of interplay between the main characters as they fight what looks like a Lovecraftian cosmic “other” attempting to break into our universe. They’re still jelling as a team as the film takes place just a few months after the first one, but definitely very much a unit. It also features a lot of very, very funny banter including a moment where Star Lord apologizes to Rocket for calling him a raccoon, saying that he meant to call him “a trash panda”. The trailer then turns to listing off just who is in the film, confirming the numerous casting announcements and rumors, most notably Stallone, dressed as a member of Nova Corps – my guess is he’s playing longstanding Guardians ally Nova – followed by Russell.

I’ll wait for the trailer to be released rather than spoil the whole thing, but the final moments with Russell must be discussed. After revealing that Russell is playing Star Lord’s father and that he’s Ego The Living Planet, the scene changes to a comedic moment in which Ego explains to Star Lord how out of curiosity about the lives of mortal beings, he took human form by meticulously re-creating every cell and function with a few extra flourishes.

That includes reproductive functions too of course – he is a father after all – prompting Drax to ask bluntly “Did you make a penis?” which mortifies Star Lord, who doesn’t want to know about his parents’ sex life. Too bad though, because Ego has no shame “Yes Drax, I have a penis” says Ego. “It’s not bad either.” Which is to say, the Marvel universe now has penis jokes.

The film recently wrapped and has a May 5, 2017 release date.
