Guam police officer quits after positive drug test

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — A Guam police officer has resigned after he tested positive for drug use, authorities said.

Police Chief Fred Bordallo announced the resignation at a public safety briefing Thursday, Pacific Daily News reported (http://is.gd/8PXtRf ).

Another officer was disciplined following a fight with a medic, Bordallo said.

About 50 officers with the Police Department were randomly screened for drug use in late January. At the time, department spokesman A.J. Balajadia said police had no reports of officers using illegal drugs.

Balajadia said the chief believes random testing helps reassure the public about the department's zero tolerance for drug use.

The officer who tested positive had been assigned to the Tumon precinct.

The drug identified in the test was not identified other than as a Schedule I controlled substance. That classification includes substances such as marijuana and a synthetic drug known as "spice."

In the other case, an officer was arrested and placed on administrative leave in January after being accused of assaulting a medic while responding to an injured person.

The officer was accused of intervening with the treatment of a patient. Investigators determined the medic was not at fault.
