GRPS hosts safety-focused event at John Ball Zoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids Public Schools families were invited to John Ball Zoo Saturday for the “Safety Matters” event, which celebrated both safety and the end of the school year.

The event was hosted by GRPS as a way to help inform families about the importance of safe gun storage, especially heading into the summer months.

“Summer months are always busier for ourselves, the police department, fire department,” said James Blessman, public safety supervisor for the district. “As we get into the summer months, we want to emphasize safety just like we do throughout the rest of the school year, but particularly as we move into the warmer months.”

Hundreds of students and family members received free admission to the zoo. They were also treated to free giveaways and safety information.

“Our scholars are very important to us, and we want to make sure that they stay safe,” Jamie Masco, the district’s family and community engagement director, said. “So wherever we are, whether it’s in school or in the community, we want to make sure that everyone is safe and happy and healthy.”
