Groupon names Kal Raman chief operating officer

CHICAGO (AP) — Groupon Inc. said Wednesday that it promoted Kal Raman to chief operating officer, a post that has been empty since before the online deals company went public late last year.

Raman, who previously was Groupon's senior vice president of global sales and operations, joined the company in April. He will continue to report to CEO Andrew Mason.

Groupon's previous COO, Margo Georgiadis, left in September, 2011 to return to Google, where she worked before joining Groupon in May of that year. Groupon went public in November, 2011.

Raman joined Groupon from eBay Inc. He's also worked at Amazon.com Inc.

Groupon shares fell 10 cents, or 3.8 percent, to close at $2.73.
