Group works to reopen Van Buren golf course

VAN BUREN, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) —A group of residents are still fighting to reopen the Cedars Country Club in Van Buren nearly two years after it closed.

Kent Henderson is one of the leaders of the Pointer Golf and Social Club, the group behind the effort to restore Cedars Country Club. Henderson says the group had a plan to pay for the reopening and the plan was approved by the Parks and Rec Committee.

However, the city council voted 4-2 against it, leaving the nearly 60-acre course vacant. Henderson says he grew up in Van Buren and has seen the golf course provide great benefits for people.

“You learn a lot of lessons about patience and how to conduct yourself and how to operate with integrity. So, there’s a lot of good lessons on the golf course and a lot of business is transacted there,” Henderson said.

KNWA/FOX24 reached out to the Van Buren mayor and city council members.

Council members have not yet responded but the Van Buren Mayor Joe Hurst says the city plans to update its city parks and recreation master plan and will hear public input soon.
