Groundbreaking held for new Starbucks location on Southwest Side

CHICAGO — A longtime vacant lot located along a busy stretch near Chicago’s Midway Airport will soon be developed.

Alderman Marty Quinn said this is much more than a Starbucks, but a win for the city and development along the Cicero Avenue corridor.

Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the alderman and others Friday for the ceremonial groundbreaking at the new Starbucks site at 64th Street and Cicero Avenue — just south of Midway Airport.

City officials say this moment has been 40 years in the making.

The city owned the plot. It was previously a gas station, and part of the proceeds from the sale of the land is going towards soil remediation.

The mayor said it’s the type of public private coordination that can drive investment in the neighborhoods.

The remediation process started last week and the new Starbucks is set to open in September.
